A Superstar Was Born... And Justified
May 15th 2006 23:56
“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you... he’s a friend of mine... and he goes by the name Justin. All the way from Memphis, Tennessee... and he’s got something special for y’all tonight. He’s gonna sing a song for y’all, about this girl.” (Senorita)
Enter: a crystal clear voice, filled with emotion, straight from the heart. Enter: Justin Timberlake, who was one of the hottest (to say the least) musicians around. Forget N*SYNC, Solo Justin was really worth talking about. Take his debut album, Justified. That was no trashy try-hard album from an ex-boy band pretty boy. That album was for real. JT’s funky rhythms and catchy lyrics made us dance, sway, bop and sing along. His voice made us laugh, cry, and come out in goose-bumps. He made us believe, which is something very few singers do anymore. Even better, he made us believe through lyrics and music he had written.
Don’t believe it? Pull out your dusty copy of the album and check out the (fantastically designed) sleeve- cross-poster that comes with the C.D. Every track was written or co-written by Justin, with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, aka The Neptunes. With Timbaland as producer, Timberlake couldn’t go wrong.
JT The Neptunes Timbaland =Fantastic.
Warning: CD may be highly addictive.
The question is, where did JT go? He had his moment of glory, a multitude of hit singles and that never-to-be forgotten moment on-stage with Janet Jackson... But where is he now? It wasn’t just his singing that was inspiring, because man could he dance! Pulling off moves that could only be described and Jackson-inspired was one of his many tricks. Michael Jackson, that is... though no doubt if he tried some of Janet’s moves he’d pull them off. Easily. In fact, Michael Jackson is, after all, Justin’s idol.
Was that the issue, though? Perhaps we don’t want a replica of someone that was great, way back when. JT’s favourite album of all time is Off The Wall, (Jackson’s debut solo album) with which Justified was compared time and time again. So, too, were Timberlake and Jackson. Some said Justin was the next Michael. One could argue, perhaps, that this was not quite justified (excuse the pun). Justin has an incredible amount of talent, both as a singer and songwriter, there is no doubt about that. Yet Michael Jackson had (and still has) something else. The power of dance. For no one moves quite like Michael. In this respect, it is somewhat unfair to compare the two. Jackson moves like no other human moves, but Justin merely imitates. An awe-inspiring imitation, if the truth be told, but even an imitation of the highest order can not be compared with the original.
All in all, it could be said that what this writer is trying to say is... Give Justin a chance. A second chance. You won’t be disappointed. After all, there are few people who can safely be called superstars, and this is one of them. Forget his dubious past as the lead singer in a boy band. Put aside your hatred for anyone connected with boy bands. Get out that dusty CD, load it onto your iPod and... Just feel... Justin.

Over time, I'm sure he'll shed his ex-boy band image - just like Robbie Williams has successfully done.
