The Veronicas

June 27th 2006 08:27
With the release of another great new single by The Veronicas, I’m reminded of how important individuality is. There are so many artists out there that remind me of another, either of a modern (still making records) or classic (not making records but generally still played on the radio) artist. When I flicked on the radio the other day, a song that I didn’t know was playing. However within about 2 bars, I was sure I knew the artist. The Veronicas.

The song, I found out after googling "The Veronicas & single", was Revolution. I’ve now heard the song about 12 times, and I love it. It retains the same sound as their other hits, 4Ever, When It All Falls Apart and Everything I’m Not. Yet it is not just a tangent to those songs. Of course, the girls from Brisbane found a sound that they liked and that was a little original, so they have every right to stick to it. What I really enjoy and admire is that though their 4 singles are quite similar in style, (apart from being recognisable as by the duo), this is actually a good thing.

Revolution retains the same great up-tempo beat as the other 3 singles. And though Everything I’m Not and When It All Falls Apart are more “down” songs, they still have a quick and energetic beat. This is unusual, but works brilliantly for the duo because of the rarity-factor. The music itself is also good - less synthesised and more rock-influenced than the average pop song.

The Veronicas seem to have blended pop, rock, punk and maybe even metal (the beats have that real head-banging feel to them) into an original sound accessible to all music lovers. And by doing this, they have a real chance of being listened to in not just five years from now, but twenty or thirty years time too.

They also have a great site.

MJ's Influences

June 12th 2006 11:32
Before I continue the Michael Jackson saga, I’d like to take a look at two of the performers who influenced MJ - Jackie Wilson and James Brown

MJ claims this phenomenal performer as one of his main influences. James Brown’s dynamic performance style is mirrored by Michael. Both performers have an energy and on-stage presence that is unrivalled by other performers. Further, Michael enhanced and developed James Brown’s style and energy, mutating it into his own.

It would be unfair to say that MJ copied Brown, or any other performer. What he did was see someone make the audience go wild. He studied these performers and their audiences, learned what worked and what didn’t. MJ used this information to create his own style of performance.

Another performer who was a huge influence was Jackie Wilson. Similar to James Brown’s influence, Wilson had a huge impact on MJ’s performance style. His dance moves, especially his toe-spins, amazed young Michael Jackson and encouraged MJ to create his own signature moves.

Michael’s performances are definitely not what one would call unoriginal. Though he was inspired by many performers, his sense of identity seems to be comprised of interpretation. Everything he does, even if it has been done before, has an MJ twist.

The Dancing Machine

June 5th 2006 01:45
Three consecutive number one songs exposed The Jackson 5 to immediate globe-wide fame. They continued to produce brilliant and popular chart-topping tunes. In 1971, the Saturday morning cartoon “The Jackson 5” was first aired on network TV in the USA. In 1972, Michael was asked to sing the title song for the movie “Ben”. This signified the “beginning” of an incredibly successful solo career. However, he and his brothers’ achievement was not over yet. Soon after “Ben”, The Jackson 5 embarked on their first overseas tour. The tour commenced in England, where they performed for and met the Queen. They continued their tour through France, Switzerland, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Africa. One victory followed another.

“Dancing Machine” was released- a disco song with a solid groove and a bright, synthesizer-enhanced sound. Along with the release of this song came the complete revelation of the MJ “package”. When an intuitive young Michael performed “Dancing Machine” on the TV show “Soul Train”, he became the dancing machine, performing a street-style dance move called the Robot. Overnight, the song rose to number one, and within a few days the Robot was appearing in dancing all over the country. This was only the beginning of the phenomenon that is Michael Jackson...

Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5

May 30th 2006 12:08
Michael Jackson began his musical career as a singer and bongo player at the tender age of five. Little did anyone know that he would become one of the most well-known singers in pop-music history.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you... he’s a friend of mine... and he goes by the name Justin. All the way from Memphis, Tennessee... and he’s got something special for y’all tonight. He’s gonna sing a song for y’all, about this girl.” (Senorita)

Enter: a crystal clear voice, filled with emotion, straight from the heart. Enter: Justin Timberlake, who was one of the hottest (to say the least) musicians around. Forget N*SYNC, Solo Justin was really worth talking about. Take his debut album, Justified. That was no trashy try-hard album from an ex-boy band pretty boy. That album was for real. JT’s funky rhythms and catchy lyrics made us dance, sway, bop and sing along. His voice made us laugh, cry, and come out in goose-bumps. He made us believe, which is something very few singers do anymore. Even better, he made us believe through lyrics and music he had written.
