Coheed and Cambria

August 9th 2010 03:41
Coheed and Cambria has been one of my favourite groups for many years running because they've grown from being simply a rock band to a platform for different types of media. Their music is interesting, it's intriguing, and it's very different.

Claudio Sanchez - Lead Vocals, Guitar
Travis Stever - Lead Guitar, Vocals
Mic Todd - Bass
Chris Pennie - Drums

Coheed's music nowadays falls under the new-progressive rock category, but throughout the ages they've taken pieces from a number of different genres, and nothing less was expected from the ongoing development of such a colourful group. Back in the days of Second Stage Turbine it was still progressive but with much more minor tonality, the music was erratic, while at the same time including a pop and punk influence. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 will start to show the pop influence more evidently. But the whole time - Coheed and Cambria has been adding a creative and interesting element to a genre stapled with stereotypes for it's simplicity.

If I had to wager a guess at Coheed's two main influences, I would say it sounds like At The Drive-In at a Rush party. Funny thing is that Claudio himself will quote ATDI as an influenece. But the band would later go on to say that none of them were Rush fans, in fact, they started listening to Rush after their second album, when attention had been drawn to the similarities between the groups. This is the most surprising to me, I can hear the ATDI influence, it's that creepy, off-time, weird sound, and Coheed really has it. But I think the rhythmic devices used in Coheed's earlier pop influenced tracks portray an UNCANNY similarity to Rush songs. And, uh... Not to mention both bands have vocalists with particularly high ranges. It's funny to see where the unintentional resemblance shows up. The band has also mentioned classic acts like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden and Queen as influences.

This is an awesome band particulary because of the concepts behind the music. That's also what has enabled them to expand those concepts into different forms of media, which in Coheed's case is a graphic novel. It's all based around a story put together by Claudio Sanchez called "The Amory Wars." In fact, the story itself is about Claudio Kilgannon, son of Coheed Kilgannon and Cambria Kilgannon. It is set in Heaven's Fence, a set of 78 planet which are held together by intricate beams of energy known as The Keywork. The Keywork symbol, shown below acts as the logo for the band.

The lyrics of each song depict snapshots of The Amory Wars, not in proper chronology, but snippets of the story can be picked out of the lyrics. The Second Stage Turbine does not start the series, rather Year of The Black Rainbow, the band's most recently released studio album starts off the story. What fascinates me the most about this band is the way the lyrics, the genre, and the band members themselves seems to share and understand the same theme. As a music fan, I can really respect that kind of consistency in expression. Check out the links up top and if you like what you hear then please check out this band, they really helped me open my mind to a world of new music
