Getting into the game...

August 2nd 2010 07:20
Hello there my soon-to-be friends and critics,

I must confess, this is the very first blog I've ever had the pleasure of writing. I've come to join such a widely known institution with the purpose of sharing my own knowledge with the world, and hopefully picking up a great deal along the way.

I've followed hundreds upon hundreds of blogs over the past few years and they've provided me with enough expertise to come to the conclusion that one can, quite literally, learn to do almost anything on the internet. There are of course many limitations on such a statement, but it seems that the case is that the more established a topic or practice is in reality, the more information one can find surrounding such topics.

But what to write about? What facet of my experience is worthy of contributing to such a vast body of knowledge? What if I like so many others have fallen victim to the plague of ignorance found oh so commonly on the internet? I couldn't perpetuate such a cancer. Thus my choice of topic was made with such a consequence in mind.

There have been many skills that I've been able to pick up fairly quickly, but I simply couldn't be bothered to hold onto. There have been many experiences that I've been so fiercely passionate about, but I can't honestly say I have the skill, talent, or capacity to pursue them to a higher degree. Yet one part of my life is undoubtedly both my passion and my calling, and that part is music. And since I made this discovery it has spread into so many other facets of my experience that I know without a shred of doubt in my mind that the reason I was put on this earth is to make music.

Thus, it is the purpose of this blog. And I should like to keep the purpose as broad and vague a term as is music. We're talking anything from classical, nu-metal, bluegrass, indie, buskers that I find to be particularly interesting, the flock of seagulls that inspired you to write a symphony, the CNC router that helped you realized how the concepts of tempo and pitch are related. Anything... Really, anything.

I am going to voice my opinions as much as I possibly can, but I won't do so without supporting them, and I'm not particularly bold. If you disagree with me, please argue with me, I welcome it with open arms. The biggest conceptual breakthroughs I've ever made have come through discussion. But please, don't be rude to me, you're better than that.

I should also like to mention some specific details about how music has affected my life up to this point, and of course I'll finish of this little ditty with some seriously shameless self promotion. I spent my youth watching my father and my older brother collaboratively learning how to play the acoustic guitar. This consisted of many, many misplayed takes of stairway to heaven, blackbird, slide or one. I should also mention that today my older brother is one of the most skilled musicians I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I picked up the acoustic when I was 11 years old, that was 9 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made.

I stuck with the ol' canoe stick for a few years until I got an electric guitar, and I got to jam with some friends. Then everything changed, at 11 years old , myself and and guitarist friend Jordan White laid the initial foundation for the band we both still play in today. It was from Jordan, my older brother Ryan, and the internet that I learned to play. I never got to take lessons, and I'm happy I didn't, I picked up the guitar purely because I wanted to, not because my parents were paying for lessons. I always played, never that often, but I was alright, it took getting ahold of a proper rig and playing a few gigs before I realized that this music thing was pretty serious, and that I absolutely loved it.

I'd say I've only really taken playing seriously for the last three or four years. And in those years I've become a singer and a drummer, and I'd say a bassist, but I don't have one, so I guess it's not exactly official. More recently I've spent more time practicing vocals than guitar, but I'll always be a guitarist at heart.

That band I mentioned, yeah we're kind of a big deal, you know how it is. We're called the Mercy of Jane, and the guys in that band have been my closest friends growing up. We started off playing powerpop, like sum 41 when they first started out. But it's gotten much more progressive since then. With a touch of Rush, and Coheed and Cambria thrown in there. We just released our very first 6 track self-titled EP, and you can see the development of the band in only 6 songs. I'm the singer and rhythm guitarist. I'll leave some links to our pages and a video at the bottom of this post.

If you've made it this far, thank you, you now know me much better. I hope that you take a look at my other posts, and you have any suggestions for me, please let me know, it's all about the readers right?
