MJ's Influences

June 12th 2006 11:32
Before I continue the Michael Jackson saga, I’d like to take a look at two of the performers who influenced MJ - Jackie Wilson and James Brown

MJ claims this phenomenal performer as one of his main influences. James Brown’s dynamic performance style is mirrored by Michael. Both performers have an energy and on-stage presence that is unrivalled by other performers. Further, Michael enhanced and developed James Brown’s style and energy, mutating it into his own.

It would be unfair to say that MJ copied Brown, or any other performer. What he did was see someone make the audience go wild. He studied these performers and their audiences, learned what worked and what didn’t. MJ used this information to create his own style of performance.

Another performer who was a huge influence was Jackie Wilson. Similar to James Brown’s influence, Wilson had a huge impact on MJ’s performance style. His dance moves, especially his toe-spins, amazed young Michael Jackson and encouraged MJ to create his own signature moves.

Michael’s performances are definitely not what one would call unoriginal. Though he was inspired by many performers, his sense of identity seems to be comprised of interpretation. Everything he does, even if it has been done before, has an MJ twist.

I agree with all your points there!! MJ sure knows what works and what doesn't when it comes to attracting the masses.

By being able to study the finer points of another performer and making some his own through various fine-tuning and what not, is the mark of a truly talented performer/artist.

I thought I'd just add, I recently received his "Live in Bucharest" DVD, and it is more brilliant than I remember. Many artists get less interesting the more times you watch them, but MJ just gets more and more amazing - as I notice the finer details the more times I see him.

Thanks Charles for your comtinuous support!
