Dubstep

December 10th 2011 01:00
There's a certain reaction when something new and different hits the mainstream, it's a reaction of uncertainty. One might ask themselves whether or not this reaction is due to the novelty of a new idea, or whether or not that idea is truely and genuinely revolutionary.

Have you ever heard of dubstep?

If you haven't before, don't get too excited. I've come to the realization that most people don't enjoy this stuff the first time they hear it. I've played a few friends their first dubstep tracks, and I usually end up getting some lip about how awful it is.

So it's kind of scotch for your ears, it's pretty harsh at first, but once you try a few different kinds and get some experience under your belt, it's all smooth sailing.

SO....

Let's talk about it.

Personally I would describe it as a fusion of house and techno, with a darker, minor tonality woven into it. Dubstep's trademark might very well be a synth instrument that shows up in most, but not all dubstep tracks. I couldn't even tell you what it's called, I've really just identified it as the sine wave sound. It's a synth that uses an effect to make the instrument sound out bursts in a specified rhythm. The rhythm usually changes quickly, and several times through each song/melody. There are usually sounds in there that aren't instruments, sometimes lasers, sometimes screeching, whatever you could think to put into it. But the randomness of the whole thing is almost why it's so great. In conclusion, dubstep is an unorthadox kind of house music.

The association with house comes from the fact that dubstep usually only exists as remixes of other songs, or samples, etc. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and there are definitely dubstep songs that are completely original. But alot of them have taken a chorus, or melody from some other song, whether it be top 40, rock, rap etc. If anything I find it gives most of the songs something familiar to come back to.

What inspired my personal interest, is the minor tonality of it. In fact, some dubstep songs remind me of my favourite metal tracks. And my favourite part of metal, is just how epic it is. And dubstep bass drops are pretty damn epic. I cannot get over listening to techno that makes me want to headbang. These guys are making songs that are dark and emotional, but still melodic.

Sometimes it's slow, sometimes it's really dark. These parts strike me as similar to those pig-squeeling metal breakdowns you find in the really dark stuff.

If you listen to techno, it's repetitive, it is, it's a part of the genre. Not liking techno because it's repetitive is like not liking gangster rap because of it's lyrical content. In other words, you can't use the prided traits of a genre as justification for not liking the genre itself.

Alright, so now that's off my chest, let's put on some beats.

Skrillex - My favourite artist of this genre so far. Some would argue this isn't even dubstep, and I would encourage them to.
First of the Year

Rock n Roll

With you Friends

Nero, totally legitimate.

The Pop Revolution

August 31st 2010 23:01
It's funny how entire decades are often represented by the music that was the most popular in that time. Maybe music is such a huge business that those artists are the biggest celebrities of that era, and by remembering those decades we naturally remember the icons of pop cultures, and thus, their music. But it's such a fluid concept, it would be very difficult to quantify the popularity or fame of a person. So it would be hard to say who takes the cake for the most famous artist of a particular time.

Everybody knows, the 90's was grunge, but since then it becomes a little more difficult to say which is the dominate genre of the decade, in fact it's probably ridiculous to look at it by decades, because realistically, it's not like the trends change on New Years Day.

So what came in after grunge? Who owns the post-Cobain era? Now everyone is welcome to disagree with me, but I'm gonna say that the pre-millennium era simply saw the development of popular trends from the 90's onward. The classic 90's rock sound evolved into nerdy college rock, and the gangster rap of the 80's and 90's took a leap into the mainstream, resulting in a number of failed MTV programs, and endless music video plays.

But I sense a consistency of late, something familiar in a lot of what I've recently heard. What qualifies a trend? I'm not sure, but what I'm noticing is not one genre that's been overplayed, but a number of different genres producing music with similar aspects. Recently, party metal and sloppy thrash metal have received some attention, and euro techno songs remixed by those overpaid American rappers I mentioned before. But there's also the development of that nerdy college rock from the early 2000's. Now a significant part of that counter culture you just can't get off of your television, is pop-punk.

All of these genres are taking some of the simplest elements of pop music, and turning them into the choruses of platinum hits. Now that just has to be a trend. But it's not all bad, music is expanding nowadays simply because so much has been done. I'm just looking forward to the future.

Sorry for the long wait

July 25th 2008 19:19
Sorry everyone for the long wait between posts. I have been on vacation for the last month or so and then have spent a lot of time deciding which blogs I want to really focus my time on to keep my work informative and more than just skin deep. After really spending time in thought on this I decided to keep drinksound a live but let my other blogs go.

I can't always guarantee that I'll be able to post daily, but I will try my best.

Thanks for your patience with me.

Music Memories

June 11th 2008 00:34

So Im sitting here in my favorite coffee house (which happens to be attached to a concert haul) and am waiting for the doors to open for a concert I've been looking forward to for awhile (Emery with The Almost), and it's flooding back all my memories of working in the music industry. I actually worked with a promoter on one of Emery's first concerts so seeing them now after they have gotten so huge is just like a time warp just with more lighting and better quality sound system.

Oh Lordy I Love Harmony

June 10th 2008 01:28
Ok, so I have decided that I am obsessed with harmony. Maybe that's what I have gone over the top Musical crazy lately. Something about sitting in a theater and hearing "One More Day" from Les Miserable belted full of harmonies in your face...just amazing! Or some beautifully sad ballad that just rips your heart out with these minor chords. I don't know what it is but a soloist can get me going but when I hear just thick chords it just takes me to another place. That place where you get those goose bumps all over your arm and even tears can well up in your eyes as the sound envelops the whole inside of your head.

There is nothing better than that...nothing.

Do You Ever Wonder...

June 4th 2008 22:23

So I was at the gym yesterday and they are always pumping music through the speakers. I was on the elliptical trainer just going crazy when I started to notice something. My strides were exactly in motion to the beat of the music.

The Mystical Qualities of Music

May 30th 2008 17:30

I was driving in my car yesterday, and I started to realize that though my MP3 player was on shuffle, I was skipping any songs that were slow and mellow. It made my brain start to think and I started to realize how often music is a reflection of our mood.

Taking over the Blog

May 29th 2008 17:41
So I have to say that taking over this blog is going to be a bit of a new experience for me. I have been featuring new music as a blogger for a while, but after reading some of the past posts on this site, I figured I would leave it to the readers to decide where this blog goes. You can see the old style of blog as well as the new style of posts as well. Which do you like better? I can keep featuring new releases, or I can stick with deep thoughts about what the music is or I can mix the two.

I'm all about pleasing the readers, so let me know

The Spice of Life

July 11th 2006 04:48
I’ve been working since 8am today. That’s an early start for me, someone who rarely even has to be awake at that time. I should be tired, sick of working. Yet I’m not. And the most obvious reason why I’m not is the music.

There’s an iPod on shuffle going. There are about 20 000 songs on the iPod, so I haven’t heard the same one twice. Nor am I likely to. There are tunes of all genres, from every year between 1950 and 2006. And while I’ll admit I don’t like a few of the songs I’ve heard thus far, it certainly beats the radio (ads are very rarely enjoyable) and would in hands down against a mixed CD on repeat.

Music in Ancient Egypt

July 10th 2006 23:29
Back in ancient times, in ancient Egypt, music was used for both religious and entertainment purposes. From around 3000 BC, female flute and lute players were hired to play at weddings, religious festivals and at court. Women in ancient times had far fewer rights, and it was almost unheard of for a woman to have a career. Yet music provided a creative and social outlet for women that they otherwise wouldn’t have had an opportunity for.

Music was very important in religious ceremonies and festivals. It was the link between the king (and his mortal subjects) and the gods. Musicians were hired to play odes to the gods, and on occasion to the king as well. This provided a connection between the king and gods, and was used to assert the ruler’s right to the throne. It was thought that music could transcend the limitations of human speech and directly communicate with the higher powers.

Music In The Advertising World

May 14th 2006 23:07
Music is universal. It binds us, brings us together. And not just in the ways you think. Music is quickly becoming one of the most openly used forms of advertising. From companies taking one of your favourite songs for their jingle, to artist-endorsements of products, one can not escape consumerism. That is not to say that music hasn’t always served this purpose, but only that it’s much harder to escape it now. There are some arguably classy ads around. Think iPod. And, of course, it would make little sense to advertise a music gadget without using music... Although it could work, purely due to shock-value. But what about that ad for Sultana Bran? Taking a great, classic, Beach Boys hit and turning it into a cereal jingle? And a really really clichéd one at that. All it does for me is remind me I haven’t hit the mute button yet.

But my aim wasn’t to rant. It was, in fact, to share an interesting fact that I read in Car Magazine. 430 of the songs to reach the Billboard Top 20 last year, (I know, I know, American), made references to cars. If that’s not great advertising, I don’t know what is. So it’s not just about Mercedes-Benz picking the perfect Kanye West or G-Unit song for their ad campaigns. Now Kanye West and G-Unit (among many others - Mercedes was the most frequently mentioned manufacturer at 100 pops) are taking the product and inserting it into their songs... And Merc sales were up 5% or so last year, probably because Kanye West fans found that, well, maybe it was worth the extra $25K to get a Merc, if The Man Himself liked them.
